The New Breakthrough on Stem Cell Technology
The 2nd Guangzhou International Forum on the Frontier of Stem Cell and Regeneration Biology was held at Guangzhou, December16th to 18th, 2009.
The forum focus on the following topics: reprogramming of stem cell, chemical biology research in stem cell, applied research in embryonic and somatic stem cells, stem cell and drug R&D, development and mode animal research, stem cell biology and cloning. The Forum invited members of the CAS Overseas Innovation Team on stem cells and cloning, expert panel members of the national key project on Development and Procreation, the nation’s 973 Project chief scientists and other professionals of the area from all over the world.
It is informed that the shackles of social ethics on stem cell research in China is removed, and meanwhile orientating the development of industrialization, giving the hope for solving the problem of organ transplants which puzzled the medical field.

“By the influences of Chinese traditional culture, many Chinese people are reluctant to donate organs”, Duanqing Pei, Ph.D., President, Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health, CAS, Key Project Expert on Development and Procreation, told reporter from South Daily. In 2007 Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health Chinese Academy of Sciences obtained the first iPS in China, The bound of stem cell research is finally freed.
Duanqing Pei, Ph.D revealed that iPS enables not only unlimited cultivating stem cell in the human body, but also break the single function of human stem cells.
In 2008, under the proposed by Duanqing Pei, Ph.D along with some other researchers, the first Union of stem cell research and regenerative technology was established in Guangzhou, China. The member of the Union including Zhong Shan University, Southern Medical University, JiNan University as well as many hospitals and biotech companies forming a close industrial chain of research, development and commercialization.
